Who We Are
We didn't know it yet, but with our first rescue, so began Our Big Fat Caribbean Rescue.
J.Edgar was our first and our inspiration. His life was short, but we vowed to try and help all the Satos and Gatos of Vieques.
It became apparent, that rescuing Vieques animals did not lie in flying out animals. Although attention getting and makes for great headlines, flying out dogs and pups was simply a short term relief and completely unsustainable. The problem was created here, and the solution would be found here. We developed a very SUSTAINABLE program with the emphasis on pet retention through Community Outreach, Spay/Neuter, Non-Profit Veterinary Care, Food Bank, and preventative care. We are one the most recognizable animal welfare organization on the island, creating a more humane island, one visit, one spay and neuter at a time. The people of Vieques know who we are, recognize our white truck, and know how to get in touch with us. When there is an animal in need, they call us. We work 7 days a week, whether it is picking up an abandoned dog on a beach, or rescuing an abandoned litter of kittens - and everything in between- we do what is needed, for our animals and our neighbors of Vieques.
Impact
Our impact can be measured in real terms. On outreach we record each home, what services the animal is in need of' how, we helped, and if the family required assistance from other organizations.
Concrete DATA COLLECTION makes us more efficient and keeps us focused on our commitment. There is also antidotal, and more enjoyable proof of not seeing roaming, neglected dogs on our streets and beaches.
Sustainability
Pet retention is the most cost effective way to manage pet populations. By providing help and support through compassionate and long-term programs, we have seen dramatic decreases in births and surrenders on the island.
